A perfect beach and a great idea, put together with planning, forethought and ‘give-backs' to the local community well describes the Salty Beaver Beach Lodge. Located two short hours southwest of Antigua, near the surfer's beach town of Sipacate, this is an idea that is unique and different. Peter Hodge, a Canadian who's lived in Guatemala for a couple of years, searched for properties and found the perfect place.
The name? he's Canadian (beaver logo) and across the street is a large salt farm...an unforgettable name and image, perfect for tourists and those looking for a quiet day in the sun, either by the new pool or on the sands. Surfing? Absolutely...there's a boy with a board who gives lessons. The palapa/thatched hut has six hammocks, plus a new kitchen and bathrooms: more importantly? Music and the signature drink, made with coconut milk and tequila.

There is daily transportation back and forth between Antigua and Sipacate, via shuttle. Enjoy a comfortable ride through the pastoral countryside, with palms and acres of sugar cane. The scenery is spectacular. Arrive in the morning, hit the pool and or the beach: have a cold beer, a margarita or two and enjoy the serenity of one of Guatemala's little known parts of paradise, the Playa Rama beach.

Peter is also doing things for the local community: he recently organized donations to the local schools and hospital. This is a great idea and done very well: all new construction, done to Canadian standards, a sparkling new blue pool and a large covered patio big enough for salsa dancing. Four overnight units are under construction. Go for the beach or the pool: the food is made with love and fresh local ingredients. The home-made pasta with chicken and buffalo cheese or the freshly caught and grilled jumbo shrimp? The locals are now calling for take-out...hamburquesas con queso y papas fritas! Take Highway CA-2 west at Esquintla and look for the Siquinala/La Democracia turnoff, towards the coast. Take to the right at La Democracia for Sipacate and turn right when the road ends at the beach. Two kilometers west and look for the blue walls and the bamboo gate. Call Peter if you're uncertain. The beer will be cold and the pool perfect.
