After 1996 the traditional power structures started to fight among themselves and a fragmentation occurred; now many smaller groups are all grabbling for power using whatever means necessary to snatch a piece of the pie. Ideology is no longer the issue, if it ever was. The so called left is behaving as bad as the so called right, both are corrupt, both are involved with organized crime, both use demagogic discourses that are not relevant to Guatemala's current situation and needs, empty rhetoric that is shallow and full of lies. The dinosaurs are not jet extinct in Guatemala, and there is even a young generation of dinosaurs rearing their heads and showing their fangs and claws.
The current acute confrontation between the sector that is in power and the sectors who want the power back, is just that, another power struggle. The tragic murder of the young lawyer and the video he left behind is used by unscrupulous political opportunists and traditional power groups, for their own gain. The bomb has been dropped; never mind the consequences for the country. I could respect the initiative if there was a strategic plan behind it to improve the country. If there was a change in a positive direction, concrete ideas, a plan that can be implemented and that is practical and immediate, a strong follow up to avoid a dangerous vacuum of power, to avoid chaos and I do not mean a coup.
But no, the plan was just to drop the bomb, to weaken the government, to create chaos and then what? What is the next step? The government is weak, the government could go down and who is to replace them? Where is the better alternative? Where is the better leader? I don't trust any of them, not any of the possible candidates who can be seen so eloquently or less eloquently on TV.
Guatemala has a syndrome: everyone who is anyone wants to be President, and they all feel they are entitled to the post. But nobody wants to do the work.
The very thin and frail threads of democracy that are supposed to hold the country together are on the breaking point.
The moderates in Guatemala who are not in favor of any side but only want justice, security, a productive life with dignity and an opportunity to provide a better future for their children, are lost in the middle of this new confrontation. As usual the moderates do not climb the barricades, do not scream insults and shout, don't write incendiary columns or comments or are on TV shows.
There are about 5 columnists in the whole country who try to maintain a balance, who try to be constructive and provide facts so the public can be informed. The rest is just a waste of space, ink and air time, they pollute the environment with their opinionated garbage. That is not unusual; it is the sad reality of the opinion makers all over the world. The opinion makers here and in the rest of the world are mostly the loudest, not the brightest. The media is playing a poor roll in informing the population regarding facts. The propaganda schemes of both sides are working full time. It is disgraceful.
