Los Angles. California. The Guatemala Times extends sincere congratulations to Norma Torres, the first Guatemalan emigrant to be elected State Senator to the California State Assembly.
The Casa de la Cultura de Guatemala en Los Angeles released the following statement:
The House of Culture of Guatemala, based in the city of Los Angeles, hereby makes the public aware that according to official results provided by the Secretary of State, Norma Torres, current mayor of the city of Pomona, postulated by the Democratic Party, was elected on November 4, as a State Assemblyman District 61, with a total of 35,945 votes (60.6%), while the Republican, Wendy A. Mair got 19.552 votes (32.8.%). For his part, Michael Mendez, got 3945 votes (6.6%) respectively.
With this happy occasion, we are pleased to say that Norma Torres, becomes the first Guatemalan immigrant to occupied a seat in the California State Assembly.
In this regard, we take this opportunity to thank the unconditional support extended to our Norma Torres, not just from the Guatemalan community, but also, from the fellow Central Americans commitment to Norma's candidacy, from its inception to the successful election. Norma Torres can now from the California State Assembly support legislation for the benefit of more than 4 million Central Americans.
We needed a voice to represent us in the California State Assembly and knew we could count on your support and we did it. We will now start the task to address the needs of our population. The District 61, it comprises by the cities of Chino, Montclair, Ontario and Pomona, where more than 35% of its population originating from Central America.
