E-mail Print PDF

agua-enmarcadoGuatemala - Antigua became the Top World destination in category of City according to the UK Magazine Wanderlust Travel Award for 2009. Antigua beat two year winner Luang Prabang in Laos and became the favorite city of the world for UK travelers that voted in their magazine. The anouncement was made at the Travel Fair  “Destinations Travel Show in London”, celebrated in London, England last week. Alfonso Matta Fahsen, Ambassador of Guatemala in England received the prize.

The correct name is "La Antigua Guatemala" and it has charmed it's way right into the heart of very selective world travelers.
If you read the list and see the competing cities, it is a great pride for Guatemala that La Antigua has been chosen as number one city in the world to visit. Number tow is Kyoto in Japan, that is a though one to beat. Paris and New York did not make it to the top ten.

Yes, times are changing; travelers are getting more adventurous and more interested in culture and exotic unusual places.
We are very happy today at The Guatemala Times and we thank the UK Magazine Wanderlust Travel Award for 2009 and their readers for making our day.

La Antigua Guatemala the Beautiful
I have been to this beautiful city couple of times including once for a wedding and love it to the core. This city used to be Guatemala's capital before being hit by active volcanoes many many years ago and the capital shifted to the now bustling Guatemala City. The city's streets and architecture have been beautifully preserved to reflect the colonial spanish times. Although it is a small city, it is very charming with active night life. Tourists who visit this city often make it their home and is evident from the pubs and bars belonging to English, Irish and the Germans. Local people are very friendly and food is delicious.

A great choice
I'm from the UK and have lived in Antigua for the last 18 months. A great place to live, not as much fun as San Pedro la Laguna, but beautiful buildings, incredible light, and amazing volcanoes.

Is not just Antigua, everywhere I've been in Guate has been great. Personal favourite, quiet mornings at Lake Ayarza.
