Guatemala - President Alvaro Colom inaugurated the Second Assembly of the Standing Committee on Land Registration in Latin America
The Land Registry is considered a critical element for the resettlement of people uprooted by the civil war, as well as a valid tool to guarantee the rights of indigenous peoples over the territory and the economic strengthening of municipalities.
The Standing Committee on Land Registration in Latin America (PCCI) was established in May 2006, within a Seminar on Land Registration developed at the Training Center of the Spanish Cooperation in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia).
In La Antigua Guatemala on Monday, November 24, with the presence of the President of Guatemala, Alvaro Colom Caballeros, and the Ears, the meeting of directors of the Ibero-American Land Registry Committee of the region was inaugurated. The event will take place from November 24 to 28 at the Training Center of the Spanish Cooperation. This second meeting will focus on progress in the land registry as a tool for social cohesion in Latin America.
The work of land registration of Latin American institutions is of vital importance at present. It affects the local property taxes that where the main local resource for income of municipalities in many countries in the region. It also represents a support to agriculture, environmental management and housing policy, besides being, in many countries, a key tool in the process of land titling, which facilitate access of citizens to own property.
During this second meeting, participants can share experiences, learn best practices and provide continuity and stability of institutional relations. Moreover, within the framework of the assembly's regular CPCI, there will be renewing the leadership positions of the Committee and to confirm acceptance of new members. In addition, it will review the status of certain matters related to their functions.
The event is organized by the Directorate General of the Cadastre of the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Spain and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), and with the support of the Permanent Committee on Cadastre in Latin America.
