Guatemala - Guatemalan citizens will soon have the possibility to directly denounce corrupt police actions through phone lines opened by the Guatemalan Police Force.
The new Chief of the Guatemalan Police, Marlene Blanco Lapola, announced that the Police department will create direct phone lines for the public to be able to denounce and report on corrupt police actions. The lines will be operative in a few weeks. She says that she personally will attend certain calls that merit her attention, according to the seriousness of different cases.
The numbers in capture of corrupt members of the national Police have increased since Marlene Blanco Lapola was appointed Chief of Police. However, the process to clean up the Police department is a long process. The phone line to denounce corrupt members of the Police is another step in the right direction. and newly trained Police
According to statements of the sub- director of Police, Rember Larios, this action is designed to foment a culture of participation of the Guatemalan citizens' in denouncing corrupt police actions. With the collaboration of the citizens the Police Department will be able to find and prosecute corrupt elements of the police force.
The new Chief of the Guatemalan Police, Marlene Blanco Lapola, is seeking direct communication with the citizens and this initiative is a big step forward to accomplish the goal.
No Police department can be effective without the participation of the communities they serve.
Rember Lario also stated that members of the Police force have started to denounce corruption among their own lines, he explained that now the Police had the commitment to investigate and prosecute the complaints made by citizens.
The combined efforts of the Police and the citizens are expected to produce results in cleaning up the police forces and getting newly trained police officer into the ranks as soon as possible. Well trained honest police elements are of paramount importance to change the old system.
