Guatemala. Human Rights groups are denouncing with the gravest concern, that several members of UDEFEGUA, Protection Unit for Human Rights Defenders in Guatemala, are again receiving death threats, they are being intimidated by cars following them, one member had a break in at his home, where important information was stolen.
The death threats and the harassment started on Thursday April 30, 2009 and have continued until today.
Why is UDEFEGUA being targeted and intimidated?
UDEFEGUA recently has been documenting, investigating and informing about the intimidation, tortures and extra- official executions of local activists in the departments of San Marcos, Quiche, San Juan Sacatepequez and other rural communities.

They have for many years successfully investigated and documented abuses of power, both in present day Guatemala and abuses from the past during the internal conflict.

There have also been significant advances in the prosecution of cases that UDEFEGUA has documented and investigated for years.
The presentation on March 11th, 2010, of their Report: "Violence, Response after 10 years of activism" shows the progress and effectiveness of UDEFEGUAS´s work to break the patterns of impunity in Guatemala.

The effectiveness, the tenacity and continuity of the work of UDEFEGUA makes them a target for the dark powers in Guatemala who benefit from the usual impunity.

The Public Ministry and the Guatemalan Human Rights office is urged to investigate the cell phone numbers from witch the threats originate and the licence plates of the cars that have been shadowing the members of UDEFEGUA
