
San Jose, Costa Rica - The Vice -President of the U.S. Joe Biden arrived Sunday to San Jose, Costa Rica from Chile, where he attended the Progressive Governance Conference. He met with seven Latin American and European heads of state at that two-day gathering including the Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom.
Biden meet privately with President Oscar Arias of Costa Rica today before they where joined by current or incoming heads of state from Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Panama, officials said. Honduras and Nicaragua will send deputy foreign ministers.
The most important points on the agenda are: to discuss the issues of the upcoming Summit of the Americas, environment, trade, the economic crisis, credit lines from the IMF and WB, organized crime, security issues for the region and migration. Guatemala will continue to push for a more humane migration policy regarding Guatemalan immigrants in the U.S.
The Presidents of Central America present at the meeting are: President Arias from Costa Rica, President Álvaro Colom from Guatemala, newly elected President form El Salvador Mauricio Funes, and Antonio Saca salient President of El Salvador.
