Damages in Guatemalan provinces due to rains
This is only the beginning of the rainy season, damages due Tropical Storms Arthur and Alma causing heavy rains have already affected roads, communities, housing and crops in rural areas.
The rivers Ocosito, Pacayá, Naranjo and Suchiate on the border region with Mexico are being watched closely by the population that lives nearby. In Retalhuleu, Suchitepéquez and Escuintla there is fear that the contributories to the rivers Nahualate, Mascalate, Coyolate and Samalá will create flooring in the area.
In Santa Rosa 33 families have been affected and 279 have been relocated to shelters. In San Marcos there are 105 people in shelters. In Palin 409 people where affected, in Peten 19 families have been affected, in Fraijanes 5 families where evacuated in the urban center and 14 families from the Colonia San Antonio, in San Perdo Sactepequéz 45 families where evacuated. (Source CONRED). In the department of Guatemala many houses are at risk.
The Ministry of Communications reported 65 emergencies of the road system. Landslides interrupted the roads in San Juan Chamleco, Alta Verapaz and in Nahuala, Quiché.
Crops of beans and corn are at risk due to the constant rains. Pineapple, plantain and banana production are the most sensitive to heavy rains.
