Guatemala - Vice President Rafael Espada was the honor witness to a new green initiative: Biological Corridors of Guatemalan Coffee. The Ministry of Environment and The National Coffe Association, ANACAFE signed an agreement about the biological corredors of Coffee. The principle is to motivate the sustainable production of Coffee with the respect and consideration to the agroforestal environment. The aim is to protect and promote biodiversity and responsible forest management.
The Vice President stated: To protect Nature is our best choice for the future generations, so they can grow healthy and free. We have to guarantee the conservation of the natural resources, take care of our forests and protect the environment from contamination. Vice President Espada is currently presiding over the Socio-environmental Cabinet and the special Cabinet for Water.
The coffee production is currently covering approximately 276,000 hectars of Guatemala's territory; it can be therefore considered a very strategic area for the conservation of the natural resources. Biological Corridors of Guatemalan Coffee will allow to organize and put order into sustainable development with permanent training programs targeted at local actors.
The Vice President insited and stated strongly his interest to be able to send a message to the people of Guatemala, that as guatemalans we must be more concerned about our environment and help to protect the environment in any possible way and to use the natural resources in a rational manner. Espada exlained that the damage, contamination and degradation of the environment is one of the issues that he is most concerned about. He says that urgent meassures are necessary in conservation and protection of flora, fauna in order to preserve our own survival.
ANACAFE is working together with the Rainforest Alliance for certifications of coffee farms that meet environmentally sound standards.
