If Eduardo Meyer, ex- President of Guatemalan Parliament would talk

E-mail

Dr. Eduardo Meyer has been a figure in Guatemalan civil society and politics for a long, long time. He has been president or board member of the most important governmental and civil associations in Guatemala. His CV is still on the webpage of the Guatemalan Parliament and it is very interesting.

He has been Minister of Education, Rector of the University of San Carlos, Ambassador to the OEA, ex- President of Guatemalan Parliament, etc., etc., etc. He knows everybody who is anybody in Guatemalan politics. He has participated in many branches of the government in national and international affairs. He has been a member of the most important professional associations in Guatemala.

We will see in the coming weeks and months that nothing will happen to Dr. Eduardo Meyer, who yesterday presented his resignation as President of the Guatemalan Parliament due to a scandal of mismanagement of funds where he sustains his innocence.

There are reasons for his immunity to prosecution, he is still a Member of Parliament. But the most important reason to refrain from legal actions against him is not his parliamentarian immunity. Dr Meyer knows too much, should he talk, many, many other important public figures in Guatemala could be exposed.

I knew Dr. Meyer, who is an Orthopedic Surgeon, in medical school, some 25 years ago. I always considered him to be a relatively benign political figure, and he was very brave to assume the role of Rector of University of San Carlos in very difficult times in Guatemalan history.

In Guatemala's political system I do not know many snow white characters, I do not think you can remain completely innocent in any political system, not only in Guatemala.

The blame of this financial corruption scandal and the blame of many other financial corruption cases both in public and private sector (banks, investment firms) is to be placed at different doorsteps: The Nations Attorney General, Ministerio de Gobernación, Ministerio Público - MP - Judiciary System, Superintendencia de Bancos, the highest Guatemalan Supervisory entity of Banks and Investment Firms, the Banking System, Banco de Guatemala and the Official Financial Auditing system of the nation - Controloria General de la Nación.

The Gourmet Cooks of the highest financial corruption cases are all the above. They all work together to foment or ignore corruption and to cover each other's backs.I would be very interested in knowing what this group of people is discussing right this minute. Although considering that this is only about approximately 11 million dollars, I would think they have better and bigger fish to fry.
