Potential disasters caused by overflow of rivers, landslides and damages to infrastructure in Guatemala where predicted when the rainy season started this year.
The pattern of rainfall has changed significantly in Guatemala in the last 10 years. Oversaturation of rivers and land caused by torrential unnatural rainfall patterns have caused disasters every single year. Destruction of crops occur every year, damage to road infrastructure and bridges are always in the news, landslides in precarious location where people have decided to build their shacks in barrancos, at riversides and other unsuitable locations cause death and destruction.
There is no government budget that will ever be enough to prevent these disasters, or to help all the individuals that are affected by them. Every year millions are spend in emergency attention to victims of natural disasters caused by rain in Guatemala.
It is time to finally pay attention to the causes of the climate change we are seeing and living every year in Guatemala.
Severe deforestation, overpopulation, lack of urban planning and continuous damage inflicted to the environment are causing this phenomenon.
We know the causes, but no action is taken. Who is to blame: Everybody. The Government cannot solve this crisis alone.
What is the budget for reforestation projects?
Is it more or less than the budget for disasters?
Where is the implementation of the environmental laws that exist in Guatemala?
Every Industry that is cutting or burning trees knows what they are doing.
Every Industry that is pumping toxic waste into the barrancos, rivers and drainage systems of Guatemala know what they are doing.
Every Agroindustry that uses too much toxic chemicals knows what they are doing.
Substandard Mining operations are contributing to the destruction of the natural environment in Guatemala. It is no secret that the best Mining Companies do not come to Guatemala, the worst kind do, the small mining companies who only profit by criminal speculation at the Stock Market, with no budget for environmental mitigation of course. They make money by selling their stock, not by mining anything. You do not have to be an expert to know that. Just talk to an expert who has worked with the big and responsible mining company, because they do exist. There are good guys and bad guys just like in any business sector. These practices are an open secret.
We ask the people in Guatemala, nationals and foreign: what are YOU planning to do to improve the environment in Guatemala?
Let us know, it would be very interesting to see your visions and your solutions to this problem.
