The Guatemalan Consulate in New York and the Embassy in Sweden
The staff of the Foreign Ministry of Guatemala is a mosaic of very diverse people. There are some brilliant professionals with long standing careers in the Foreign Service. They have provided outstanding dedicated services to the Guatemalan community in foreign countries. They are the ones who usually do not get press coverage. They prefer to stay anonymous. They are modest diplomats.
Then, there are the others.......
But we will write about some shining examples of a Guatemalan Consulate and Embassy that provide good services, and are run by top professionals. We are sure that there are many more, we just haven't found them jet. We hope that we get more information in as time progresses.
One of the examples is the Guatemalan Consulate in New York. The Consul is Licda. Rosa María Mérida de Mora. In a recent publication in the Guatemalan newspaper "La Hora - La Voz del Migrante", a leader of the Guatemalan community in New York wrote an article about the Mobile Consulate that provides quality services for Guatemalans in New York. We have experienced the expediency and efficiency of the Consul Rosa María Mérida de Mora ourselves.
The other example is the Embassy of Guatemala in Sweden. Fernando Molina Girón is the Ambassador. They have an excellent website. They answer communications quickly, efficiently and provide good information.
Talking about websites of the Guatemalan Embassies in the world, that is another important issue. We are in the cyberspace age. The information superhighway is the internet. The technology is there, a lot is even free, use it! The internet is the new way to access information for the world. The websites are the presentation card of the country.
In general the websites can all be improved. At the moment every Embassy has a different style, content and quality.
Why not produce a standard format of contend for all of them, and then translate it into all the languages that are necessary. It is much cheaper and efficient, and news can be updated continuously in a standard way by newsfeeds.
