Guatemala. Lake Atitlan, my hope, my sanctuary, my soulhealer, my paradise, my mother, my father, my youth, my middle age, my confort, my all. It is not in this world, it is in the center of God´s soul. It is never ours, it is the creation of mother earth and divinity, it is an unending prayer.
We can only be in awe.
This special place is located at the slopes of volcano San Pedro, directly in front of Santiago Atitlan. Close, but far away from the noise and hub of tourists and the village. Fortunately no roads lead to this special place. There are no roads, no electricity and almost no people. Only the Mayas that cultivate the land and fish. Nature is king. It takes a 2.5 hour drive from Guatemala City and then a fast boat ride from Santiago to reach the opposite shore in 3 minutes. We have arrived in our own little piece of heaven. Since there is no road there are only about 5 houses at the lake shore surrounding us. The same neighbors we have had for the last 39 years, no newcomers.
We hope it can stay that way. We have a small, private but successful eco project. The birds and ducks, hummingbirds and fishes have a small safe place to live. Reforestation is king, cutting the tull is not allowed. The wildlife has increased since the lake has started to reclaim it’s territory, raising the water levels.
The water is clear and healthy where we are. It is wonderful to see how Mother Nature reclaims and restores herself if you give it a little help.
